Join us on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and learn new ways to integrate Bluetooth connectivity into your next project with the help of Silicon Labs expert engineers. Each project session will explore and solve challenges developers often face when building new Bluetooth designs.
Bluetooth software from Silicon Labs makes it possible for developers to take advantage of Bluetooth LE, Bluetooth 5, Bluetooth 5.1, Bluetooth 5.2, and Bluetooth mesh features. These features include 2M and LE Long Range PHYs, Advertisement sets, scan event reporting LE Secure Connections, LE Data Length Extensions, LE Dual Topology, and angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD). The Bluetooth software is also Apple HomeKit compliant supporting HomeKit Accessory Protocol and other Apple HomeKit features, making it suitable for Bluetooth enabled smart home accessory development. For Silicon Labs solutions pre-programmed with these software components, including a Bluetooth stack, LE secure connections, and Bluetooth 5 features, please take a look at Bluetooth Xpress.
The Silicon Labs Bluetooth SDK can be used to create standalone Bluetooth?applications for Wireless Gecko SoCs?or?modules?or alternatively network co-processor (NCP) applications. The Bluetooth SDK supports C-based application development with GCC or IAR compilers. In addition to developing and debugging applications, with the included ?Simplicity Studio?development environment, developers can take advantage of additional tools including ?Energy Profiler, Packet Trace and visual GATT editor.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). Designed for data transfer and exchange over short distances, Bluetooth makes use of the unlicensed ISM band at 2.4 GHz. Bluetooth includes a number of capabilities that span point-to-point audio streaming to large scale many-to-many mesh networks for lighting or home automation.
Silicon Labs provides flexible, highly-integrated Bluetooth products that meet the most demanding requirements for a wide variety of applications. Silicon Labs engineered products for longevity and have best-in-class RF sensitivity and power consumption. In addition, Silicon Labs offers easy-to-use but powerful software solutions that can help make application development and integration a straightforward process.
When considering security in the context of IoT, there are multiple aspects a developer needs to consider.
Very few protocols are transmitted without some form of encryption in place. The alliances behind most of the leading standards-based protocols tend to make it mandatory and most proprietary protocols tend to implement protocol security using existing well-tested industry schemes.
In all cases, however, the encryption used by the protocol is only as strong as the security offered by the physical device itself. The easiest device attack is a remote attack on software to inject malware which is why a hardware root of trust secure boot is critical. Many IoT devices are easily acquired in the supply chain and allow “Hands-On”, or “Local” attacks which allows attacking the debug port or using physical attacks like side-channel analysis to recover secrets outside of communication encryption.
